Where Are Downloaded PDF Files Saved? Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android

If you downloaded a PDF but cannot find it, first check the device’s usual Downloads location. A PDF that is open in a browser tab may not have been saved as a separate file yet. The steps below help you locate the saved copy or confirm that you need to download it again.

Where are PDFs saved on Windows?

Open File Explorer and select Downloads. In the search box, enter part of the filename or search for PDF files. If your browser has a custom download folder, open the browser’s download settings to see that location. In Chrome or Edge, the downloads list can also help you open the folder containing a completed file.

Where are PDFs saved on Mac?

Open Finder and choose Downloads in the sidebar. If the file is missing, search Finder by its name and sort by date. Safari and other browsers may use a different folder if you changed their download preferences.

Where are PDFs saved on iPhone?

Open the Files app, tap Browse, and check Downloads under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. If you saved the PDF from Safari, look at the download indicator in Safari as well. In other apps, use their Share or Save to Files option and remember which folder you selected.

Where are PDFs saved on Android?

Open Files, My Files, or the file manager supplied with your phone. Check Downloads and Documents, then search by filename if available. If you saved the file from an app such as a messaging service, check whether the app stores attachments in its own folder or requires you to tap Download first.

What if the PDF is missing?

  1. Open your browser’s downloads list and check whether the download completed, failed, or was blocked.
  2. Search the device for part of the filename or for files ending in .pdf.
  3. Return to the original website and download the file again if the first attempt never completed.
  4. Check available storage and the browser’s download location.
  5. If the website requires an account or permission, sign in or request access rather than using an unofficial mirror.
